Watkins Ludlam Winter & Stennis, P.A. is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2005 William F. Winter Law Scholarships. The eight award winners are university or college seniors from the State of Mississippi who will be entering law school in 2005. Governor William Winter presented scholarship recipients with a $1000 check and a certificate at a special luncheon held at The Capitol Club on Wednesday, May 18th. Those honored include Flora Powell, Belhaven College; Joslyn Anthony, Jackson State University; Trevor Theilen, Millsaps College; Shanna Tribble, Mississippi State University; Milton Bradberry, Mississippi Valley State University; Ashlei McAllister, Tougaloo College; Alexandra Clark, University of Mississippi; and Carrie Gray, University of Southern Mississippi.
William F. Winter, a shareholder in the Jackson office, has been associated with Watkins Ludlam Winter & Stennis, P.A. since 1968. He has served as Mississippi's Governor, Lt. Governor, Treasurer, State Tax Collector, and a state Representative. During his tenure as governor, Mr. Winter led a successful effort to pass the nation's first truly comprehensive education reform act, which established Mississippi's first public kindergartens for all children. After leaving the Governor's office in 1984, Mr. Winter continued his volunteer efforts on behalf of improved public education, civil rights, and economic opportunity. Mr. Winter has served as chair of the Southern Regional Educational Board and as a member of the boards of several colleges.
Generations of Mississippians have already, and will continue, to benefit from William Winter's work to improve education and to strengthen our communities. We are proud to establish these scholarships in his honor for all he has given to the education community of Mississippi.
The $1,000 awards will be presented on an annual basis to students from Mississippi universities and colleges and offer recipients an opportunity to pair with a Watkins Ludlam Winter & Stennis, P.A. attorney in a mentor relationship throughout their time in law school.
