Law Students
Watkins Ludlam Winter & Stennis, P.A. seeks highly motivated law students with impressive academic records and extracurricular accomplishments in undergraduate and law school. While academic excellence and extracurricular activities are important to hiring decisions, the Firm also looks for individuals with strong communication skills, character, diversity, social skills and previous work experience. A select group of first- and second-year law students who demonstrate the potential of becoming outstanding attorneys is hired each year to participate in the Firm's six-week summer program. The summer program is the foundation for the Firm's associate recruiting efforts. The summer associate program is relied upon by the firm to satisfy most of its entry level hiring needs.
Summer Associate Program
The goal of our summer program is to provide summer associates with a realistic view of what law practice is like at Watkins Ludlam Winter & Stennis, P.A. The summer program is designed to acquaint prospective associates with the Firm's attorneys, clients and community. Summer associates are directly involved in work for Firm clients and are invited to a variety of social activities to help the summer associates gain a true sense of the Firm's culture.
Orientation and Training
The summer program begins with a day of orientation. During orientation, summer associates are presented with an overview of the Firm's practice areas, computer system and other administrative information. Summer associates receive formal computer training to help acclimate them with the firm's technology. They also receive Westlaw, Lexis Nexis and CD - ROM Library research training. Each summer associate is assigned a fully equipped office, as well as secretarial support.
Sponsors
Summer associates are each assigned a shareholder sponsor to ensure a positive and productive experience at the Firm. The sponsor is available throughout the summer to provide guidance and informal feedback to the summer associate. The sponsor will make sure the Firm addresses any questions or concerns of the summer associate.
Assignments and Feedback
Summer associates are given the opportunity to work on a variety of matters from all practice groups within Watkins Ludlam Winter and Stennis, P.A. Work projects are assigned based on the legal interests of summer associates and the needs of the firm. Summer associates are invited to attend trials, depositions, client conferences and transaction closings. Summer associates are also included in practice group meetings and in-house associate training seminars. The Firm provides diverse work assignments and legal activities with the goal that summer associates will gain invaluable work experience and a better understanding of law practice.
Summer associates are given prompt verbal feedback from the attorneys with whom they work. Each summer associate will have a mid-summer evaluation and an end-of-summer evaluation to discuss his or her work projects and accomplishments. The Firm also encourages summer associates to ask questions and share their input on the summer program to help maintain an open line of communication.
Social Activities
Social events are planned throughout the summer to enable summer associates to meet our attorneys in informal settings and to help acquaint them with our community. Summer associates are invited to all firm summer activities ranging from progressive dinner parties in attorneys' homes to baseball games and cook-outs. In addition, informal lunches, spontaneous events and gatherings occur throughout the summer. Summer associates are encouraged to participate in our firm's Habitat for Humanity project and to attend other community events with Firm attorneys.
